Course Syllabus for John Winter 2011

THE GOSPEL OF JOHN                                                                                    Winter 2011

Objectives
  • Exegesis and exposition of John depending on the Morris book with theology provided by Murray’s Redemption Accomplished and Applied

  • Reflections on the Gospel of John, Leon Morris (Hendrickson Publishers: Peabody, 2000)
  • Redemption Accomplished and Applied, John A. Murray (Wm. B. Eerdmans: Grand   Rapids, 1955)
  • The Westminster Confession of Faith for Study Classes, G. I. Williamson (Phillipsburg: Presbyterian and Reformed Publishers, 2004)

Responsibilities
  • Read and study assigned materials.
  • Come prepared to ask and answer questions and to interact with other students and the materials.  See the tapes/DVDs of classes that you have to miss.
  • Two pop quizzes on relevant chapters of John taken in class.
  • One 10-page term paper double-spaced, with heading, title, page numbers, and footnotes due March 14, 2011.
  • Final, take home, March 7, due March 14.  It will be based on the readings and lectures. 

Papers:
Students will be required to do an exegetical paper that handles three things:
First, an exegesis, explaining the words of one of the following passages (see Morris).
Secondly, make an exposition indicating the relevance for today.
And, thirdly, what are the theological implications (see Murray)?
You may outline your paper in this way, but spend most time on number one.

Grading:
  • 10% for class attendance
  • 10% for pop quizzes
  • 40% for term paper
